Crews continue clearing debris from Baltimore bridge collapse
In a coordinated effort to address the aftermath of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, salvors from the Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command have embarked on a crucial mission to remove debris obstructing the waterways. Utilizing the formidable crane barge Chesapeake 1000, salvors are meticulously relocating large sections of supporting steel, a pivotal step in facilitating access to the Port of Baltimore through the Limited Access Channel. The Chesapeake 1000, hailed as the largest floating crane on the Eastern Seaboard, lends its immense capabilities to the endeavor, underscoring the magnitude of the operation. Among the significant milestones achieved, salvors successfully removed section 1-B of the Key Bridge on the Patapsco River, a formidable task considering its approximate weight of 300 tons. This section, constituting a substantial portion of the wreckage obstructing the Fort McHenry channel, represents a critical focus area for the ongoing debris removal efforts. As salvage operations persist, the top priority remains the safe and efficient clearance of the Fort McHenry channel, ensuring unimpeded maritime traffic and upholding the integrity of vital transportation arteries.
