Dramatic CCTV footage has emerged showing the moment a speedboat exploded, causing a fire that left a tour guide dead and five others on board injured. The boat, named Tequila, was moored at the Coco Pier at Ao Makham Bay on the holiday island of Phuket on Monday morning. A blast ripped through the engine room before flames engulfed the vessel, owned by the Once Yachting Phuket Company.
Emergency crews brought the inferno under control while the boat was dragged into open water. Rescuers and divers launched a search operation before finding the body of Komphet Warndee, 23, trapped beneath the sunken wreckage. The corpse was sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The five injured crew members were identified as Niwat Duangmanee, 34, Chutidech Aritcha, 27, Natthawut Poolkawe, 22, Piyathida Phochin, 23, and Komkrit Arundet, 30, all of whom were released. Police are now investigating the cause of the deadly explosion.
The Phuket City Administrative Office said forensic officers have sealed the scene while an inquiry is carried out. The fire broke out just days before its passenger's insurance policy was set to expire on April 10. It is the latest boat fire to hit the region, following a similar incident in January where 20 vessels were damaged.
