Thailand's transgender community, locally known as katoeys or ladyboys, is renowned for its talent, resilience and creativity, playing a significant role in the country's world-famous tourism and entertainment industries. This Pride Month, we're celebrating their unique place in Thai culture with five little-known facts about this remarkable community.
1. Unexpected historical roots
While gender diversity has existed in Thailand for centuries, the country's modern transgender entertainment industry expanded rapidly during the Vietnam War era. The arrival of thousands of American servicemen on rest-and-recuperation (R&R) leave transformed Pattaya into a major entertainment destination, creating new opportunities for transgender performers. This period helped establish Thailand's international reputation for spectacular cabaret shows and vibrant nightlife, which continue to attract visitors from around the world today.
2. Overcoming everyday challenges
While they embody glamour and confidence on stage, transgender women face many of the same everyday challenges as everyone else. Appearance can be especially important for performers, and hair loss is a concern for some, leading many to use wigs, hair systems or modern hair restoration treatments. Like anyone else, they balance careers, relationships and personal aspirations while navigating the unique experiences of being transgender.
3. Life-changing transformations
Thailand has become a global leader in gender-affirming healthcare thanks to its world-class surgeons and medical expertise. Renowned specialist Dr. Thep has performed more than 10,000 gender-affirming surgeries during his career. Many of his younger patients affectionately refer to him as "Daddy," describing their surgery as a life-changing experience and a new beginning. Dr. Thep believes he has performed more gender-affirming surgeries than any other individual surgeon worldwide, although no official international ranking exists.
4. The grand stage of pageantry
The world-famous Miss Tiffany's Universe pageant in Pattaya has inspired generations of transgender women to pursue careers in entertainment. Alongside internationally acclaimed cabaret productions, the competition has helped launch successful careers in modelling, television and performance. For many young transgender people, appearing on this prestigious stage represents the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
5. Breaking boundaries in everyday life
Although Thailand's ladyboys are well known internationally through cabaret shows and entertainment venues, their influence extends far beyond the stage. Today, many work successfully across mainstream society in corporate offices, hospitality, education, healthcare, media and business. Social acceptance continues to grow alongside broader LGBT rights, including the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2025.
