Nighttime housing protest continues at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol

Nighttime footage from Madrid’s Puerta del Sol shows a large crowd gathered at a housing protest encampment, with people standing on a statue and waving red flags as chants and cheers can be heard. The encampment began following the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home after she had lived there for around 70 years. The protest, led by the Madrid Tenants’ Union, has grown into a broader demonstration over Spain’s housing crisis, with hundreds of tents set up in Puerta del Sol. Protesters are calling for stronger tenant protections, measures to prevent evictions without alternative accommodation and changes to rental regulations. The encampment has also been compared with Madrid’s 2011 15-M protest movement. Video credit: David Romero / elDiario.es
