Housing crisis protests continue in Spain following pensioner eviction

Footage shows demonstrators gathering around tents, banners and protest flags in the central square on September 27, a day after a major housing march through the capital.

Spain's Government Delegation in Madrid estimated that around 25,000 people joined the September 26 demonstration, which ended with protesters setting up an overnight camp in Puerta del Sol. Abascal had been evicted three days earlier from the Retiro apartment where she had lived for more than 70 years, prompting a series of demonstrations in the city. The Madrid tenants' union said protesters were calling for measures including longer-term rental security, rent controls and a moratorium on evictions. Official figures from Spain's National Statistics Institute show housing, water and energy accounted for 33.2 per cent of average household spending in 2025, with expenditure in that category rising 5.8 per cent from the previous year. Hundreds of people remained camped in the square on September 27 as organisers said the protest would continue into the following days.
