Major Landslide Hits Rimbi in Sikkim, Over 30 Houses Affected Amid Heavy Rainfall

A major landslide has struck the Rimbi area of Gyalshing district in Sikkim, affecting more than 30 houses and forcing several families to move to safer locations. The landslide occurred on the night of September 24 following days of heavy rainfall in the region. Large quantities of mud, rocks and debris came down from the upper slopes and spread into the residential area. Several houses, including government accommodation, were damaged or rendered unsafe. Residents said a stream was blocked by the landslide before its flow was redirected towards the village, carrying mud, debris and large boulders into residential areas. Some displaced families are staying at the Rimbi Panchayat House, while others have taken shelter at relief facilities or with relatives. The latest incident is part of a series of landslides affecting Rimbi and neighbouring Singlitam during September. Earlier landslides had already damaged the Rimbi-Yuksom road, an important route connecting parts of West Sikkim. Authorities have been carrying out damage assessments and monitoring vulnerable areas. Roads and Bridges Department teams have been involved in debris clearance and efforts to restore connectivity, while district authorities have arranged relief assistance for affected families. The Sikkim government has directed officials to remain on high alert and closely monitor the situation as further rainfall could trigger additional landslides. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to move to safer areas and avoid active landslide zones, streams and debris accumulation areas. No loss of life was reported in the latest landslide, according to reports available so far. However, the extent of damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure is still being assessed.
