Dramatic nighttime footage captured by Amar Shergill (@AmarShergillCA) shows intense lightning and heavy rain illuminating the National Mall and Washington Monument during a severe thunderstorm in Washington, D.C., on September 3.
The powerful storm brought wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, downed around 300 trees, damaged cars and homes, and left tens of thousands without power.
The D.C. area was also hit by an extraordinary burst of lightning, with thousands of flashes recorded as the storm moved through.
Shergill said he sheltered at the Lincoln Memorial for more than an hour as the severe weather swept across the capital.
