Massive Shelf Cloud Looms Over Rural Oakfield, New York, Amid Severe Storms

A massive shelf cloud stretched across the sky over rural Oakfield, New York, as severe thunderstorms moved through Western New York on September 2. Footage and images captured by atmospheric science student and tornado photographer @wxtommyturtle show the dark storm outflow spreading above green fields. The dramatic cloud formation developed along the leading edge of the storm, where strong downdrafts and gusty winds can produce hazardous conditions.
