Muddy Floodwaters and Debris Inundate Streets in Chile’s Tocopilla After Torrential Rain

Muddy floodwaters carrying rocks and debris swept through streets in Tocopilla, northern Chile, after intense rainfall triggered an aluvión from activated quebradas on August 18.
The heavy precipitation, unusual for the region’s extremely arid climate, reportedly caused mud and water to enter homes across large parts of the city, while Tocopilla was temporarily isolated.
Previously constructed containment basins helped reduce the amount of rocks and debris reaching urban areas. However, the flooding has renewed concerns over the risks faced by communities built near flood-prone ravines in northern Chile’s desert region.
