Scientists discovered the first new Ecuadorian velvet worm species in 100 years.

Researchers led by Jorge Montalvo from the USFQ Museum of Zoology named the species Oroperipatus tiputini, or the Tiputini velvet worm, in honour of the Tiputini Biodiversity Station within the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve.
