Hundreds of Galapagos land iguana endemic to the Galapagos have been released back onto one of the islands of the archipelago where they have been extinct for 200 years after first of all eradicating goats, pigs and sheep that had been left there by sailors.
The 461 Galapagos land iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) were captured on the North Seymour island, where they had survived, and have been released after a quarantine period to make sure they had no parasites or illnesses, to the neighbouring Galapagos island of Santiago, where they had become extinct.
